Constitution Day: Home

What is Constitution Day?

of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America. --Preamble - U.S. Constitution

Constitution Day celebrates when the 39 delegates of the Constitutional Convention completed and signed the Constitution of the United States on September 17, 1787. The Constitutional Convention convened in response to dissatisfaction with the Articles of Confederation and the need for a strong centralized government. --Primary Documents in American History (Library of Congress)
